The combat’s fun enough that this formulaic design doesn’t turn me off Vampire Smile completely, but it certainly made it hard to play for more than a level or two at a go.

The campaign largely boils down to a series of arenas - wherein you’re temporarily trapped and forced to kill all the enemies before proceeding - followed up by a boss battle. The whole battlefield is your playground in any given skirmish.Īs much as I enjoyed fighting in Vampire Smile, though, I wish there’d been more variety to the pacing. It’s one thing to fight guys on the ground, but it’s quite another to see the spectacle of knocking them into the air, dodging up to meet them, then throwing them onto the ground while shooting them after they land. Dodging isn’t just an essential tool for overcoming the odds, it’s a flashy, fun mechanic that makes combat vastly more enjoyable and flexible.

Having a bullet pass through you at the last minute, or narrowly dodging a sword so that it hits the other enemy (yes, enemies can hurt one another now), makes me feel like a superhuman death machine. Dodging is mapped entirely to the right stick, and enables you to both dodge on the ground as well as repeatedly use it to fly through the air. The combat in Vampire Smile is empowering not only because you’re able to dish out crazy amounts of violence, but also because how mobile each character is. It’s intense, and resulted in more than a few moments where I realized I wasn’t breathing because I was so focused. You’re challenged to manipulate the entire room you’re in during any skirmish, dodging enemy attacks at the last minute, flying up into the air, combining attacks to rack up combo points, and challenging yourself to see how many guys you can take on while remaining unscathed.

Each character gains access to four melee weapons as well as a firearm, and each encounter is a flurry of slashes, dodging and bullets. The core experience, and the entire reason to play Vampire Smile, is the rewarding, fast-paced combat. The story’s told through great looking comic panels, but it’s too nonsensical to warrant more than a passing glance to admire the art. It has two campaigns, one continuing the story of the titular Dishwasher, the other telling the tale of his deeply troubled sister, Yuki. The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile is the ultra-violent follow up to the indie developed The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai.
